Algeria: Constitutional Realities vs. Media Campaigns on Religious Freedoms

ALGIERS – Amidst escalating media campaigns targeting Algeria, specifically regarding the issue of religious freedoms, there is a pressing need to highlight the constitutional and legal facts, as well as the lived reality that confirms the Algerian state’s commitment to the principles of tolerance and coexistence.

These campaigns, often based on reports from certain international organizations, coincide with a period of intense Algerian diplomatic activity that reaffirms its openness and respect for religious diversity. This was most notably evidenced by the historic visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the Vatican, where he was received by Pope Leo XIV.

Algeria: Constitutional Realities vs. Media Campaigns on Religious Freedoms

Prior to this visit, three international non-governmental organizations, including Human Rights Watch, addressed a letter to Pope Leo XIV. The letter contained allegations against Algeria regarding a lack of respect for freedom of religion and belief, claiming that legal and administrative restrictions are imposed on religious minorities, particularly followers of Protestant churches. These organizations urged the Pope to pressure Algerian authorities to lift what they termed “arbitrary travel bans” and to respect the rights to freedom of expression, association, and assembly.

These claims follow previous reports, such as the U.S. State Department’s inclusion of Algeria on its “Special Watch List” for alleged severe violations of religious freedom.

Constitutional Guarantees and Legal Framework Algeria reaffirms, through its Constitution and laws, the guarantee of the free exercise of religious worship and the protection of places of worship for all citizens without discrimination.

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmehdi, previously emphasized that these laws are not merely theoretical texts but are firmly established principles applied on the ground. This is manifested in the protection of places of worship and the provision of appropriate conditions for religious practice, while ensuring respect for the laws of the Algerian state.

To further this commitment, Algeria established the National Commission for Non-Muslim Religious Worship, an official framework that ensures coordination and consultation to protect religious freedom. This body reflects the state’s will to organize and regulate non-Muslim religious practices in a way that guarantees their rights while maintaining public order.

A Testimony of Coexistence The testimony of Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers, serves as conclusive evidence of the positive reality of religious coexistence in the country. He has stated that “respect is felt and lived daily in Algeria.” Coming from the highest Christian religious authority in the country, this testimony directly refutes the allegations promoted by international organizations regarding the restriction of religious freedoms.

Ultimately, these allegations appear to be part of broader attempts to politicize the human rights file and use it as a tool for pressure against sovereign states, while completely ignoring the clear legal framework and the extensive efforts made by the Algerian state to ensure the rights of all.

Historic Papal Visit to Annaba: A Message of Dialogue and Algerian Hospitality

ANNABA – The charming coastal city of Annaba, located 550 km from the Algerian capital, is preparing for the historic arrival of Pope Leo XIV. This official visit marks the first-ever Papal journey to Algeria, carrying profound spiritual, cultural, and political dimensions. It serves as a clear global message, showcasing Algeria’s pivotal role in bridging the Mediterranean’s two shores and the Islamic and Christian worlds.

Historic Papal Visit to Annaba: A Message of Dialogue and Algerian Hospitality

Speaking to AFP regarding the preparations for the April 14th visit, Father Farid Wikisa, Rector of the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Annaba, shared his perspective:

“He is the first Pope to have us in his thoughts and come to visit us. It is a deeply moving moment,” Father Wikisa stated. “We are what I call a ‘small flock,’ a minority. But that does not mean we are forgotten. On the contrary, the Pope’s presence supports us as a community, bringing a message of encouragement and solidarity.”

Algerian Raï Legacy Revived: Sting Releases ‘Desert Rose Reimagined’ EP

Algerian Raï Legacy Revived: Sting Releases ‘Desert Rose Reimagined’ EP

ALGIERS / LONDON – Iconic British musician Sting has officially released the Desert Rose Reimagined EP, a collection featuring three new remixes of his record-breaking 2000 hit. While the release looks to the future of the dance floor, it serves as a powerful reminder of the Algerian creative DNA that made the original a global phenomenon.

The Algerian Soul of a Global Classic

The original “Desert Rose” was never a solo effort; it was a bridge between the West and the heart of North Africa. The track’s identity is defined by:

The Voice of Raï: The instantly recognizable, soaring vocals of legendary Algerian artist Cheb Mami, whose performance brought the authentic emotional depth of Raï music to millions of listeners worldwide.

Algerian Authorship: The track was co-crafted by Algerian songwriter Cheb Raba (Rabah Zarradine), ensuring the lyrical and melodic structure remained rooted in genuine Algerian folk traditions.

Reimagining a Masterpiece

The new EP features a standout remix by the duo Bedouin (Tamer Malki and Rami Abousabe). Their “reimagined” version honors the cinematic spirit of the 2000 original while injecting deep house rhythms and down-tempo grooves.

Crucially, this new version continues to lean heavily on the North African stylings that gave the song its initial fire. By blending Middle Eastern flair with the foundation laid by Mami and Raba, the remix ensures that the Algerian influence remains the “spine” of the track’s international appeal.

Chart-Topping Heritage

Originally appearing on the album Brand New Day, “Desert Rose” successfully broke into the Billboard Hot 100 Top 50 and dominated Top 10 charts across the globe. Decades later, this EP confirms that the fusion of Western pop and Algerian Raï remains one of the most potent musical exports in history.
