ANNABA – The charming coastal city of Annaba, located 550 km from the Algerian capital, is preparing for the historic arrival of Pope Leo XIV. This official visit marks the first-ever Papal journey to Algeria, carrying profound spiritual, cultural, and political dimensions. It serves as a clear global message, showcasing Algeria’s pivotal role in bridging the Mediterranean’s two shores and the Islamic and Christian worlds.

Speaking to AFP regarding the preparations for the April 14th visit, Father Farid Wikisa, Rector of the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Annaba, shared his perspective:
“He is the first Pope to have us in his thoughts and come to visit us. It is a deeply moving moment,” Father Wikisa stated. “We are what I call a ‘small flock,’ a minority. But that does not mean we are forgotten. On the contrary, the Pope’s presence supports us as a community, bringing a message of encouragement and solidarity.”

Father Wikisa expressed his admiration for the spontaneous enthusiasm of the Algerian people, who extended an invitation to the Pope as soon as he expressed a desire to visit the historical sites of Saint Augustine. The visit aims to continue the ongoing interfaith dialogue and strengthen ties between the Christian and Islamic worlds.

The Rector emphasized that this visit will reshape international perceptions of Algeria, offering a unique opportunity to reveal the country’s true face. He added that the global focus will shift away from the difficult memories of the “Black Decade,” replaced by an image of the hospitality and generosity of the Algerian people and their enduring capacity for peaceful coexistence.
