Hunger in Morocco: A harsh reality behind the Makhzen’s carefully crafted image

Algeria Gate: Morocco’s deepening social and economic crisis is becoming increasingly difficult to conceal. Scenes of people raiding markets, stealing meat, potatoes, fruits and vegetables paint a disturbing picture of the hardships facing sections of the population.

In a country where access to affordable food should be a basic priority, the sight of people fighting over essential products raises serious questions about poverty, purchasing power and food security.

While the Moroccan authorities continue to invest heavily in projecting an image of prosperity, development and regional influence, many ordinary citizens are struggling with the most fundamental necessities of daily life. For families already burdened by rising living costs, putting food on the table has become an increasingly difficult challenge.

The contradiction is striking: a country seeking to present itself as a regional model while scenes of hunger, desperation and market disorder expose the socioeconomic difficulties that its official narrative often overlooks.

Rather than directing its energy towards addressing these pressing domestic challenges, the Makhzen continues to devote considerable attention to its regional ambitions and its relentless media campaigns against Algeria.

Ultimately, no amount of propaganda can replace affordable food, decent living conditions or social justice. A country’s real strength is measured not by the image it projects abroad, but by the dignity and living standards it guarantees its own people.

Tosyali Algeria exports 40,000 tonnes of steel to Europe

Tosyali Algeria exports 40,000 tonnes of steel to Europe

Algeria Gate: Algeria has taken another significant step towards diversifying its exports, as steel manufacturer Tosyali Algeria announced the shipment of 40,000 tonnes of iron and steel products to European markets. The operation, marking National Export Day, highlights the country’s growing ambitions to strengthen its industrial presence internationally and reduce its dependence on hydrocarbon revenues.

The shipments departed from the Port of Arzew in the western province of Oran, with Poland and Italy serving as the two European destinations.

Two major shipments strengthen Algeria’s European trade

The export operation consists of two separate shipments, each carrying 20,000 tonnes of steel products destined for European industrial markets.

The first shipment, bound for Poland, comprises 20,000 tonnes of hot-rolled steel coils (HRC), a widely used industrial material essential to automotive manufacturing, construction, machinery production and various engineering applications.

The second shipment, destined for Italy, consists of 20,000 tonnes of steel slabs, semi-finished products used in the manufacture of steel sheets, plates and other industrial components.

Together, the shipments represent 40,000 tonnes of Algerian steel entering European markets, illustrating the expanding commercial reach of the country’s metallurgical industry.

The operation also underscores the strategic importance of the Port of Arzew as a maritime gateway connecting Algeria’s industrial production facilities with international markets.

Located in Bethioua, in the province of Oran, Tosyali Algeria has emerged as a major player in the country’s iron and steel industry.

The industrial complex forms part of Algeria’s broader efforts to develop domestic manufacturing capabilities, increase the added value of locally produced goods and strengthen the competitiveness of Algerian products abroad.

By exporting hot-rolled coils and steel slabs, the company demonstrates its ability to supply products used in international manufacturing and industrial supply chains.

The latest operation also reflects the importance of industrial investment, modern production infrastructure and international commercial partnerships in supporting Algeria’s economic transformation.

European markets represent an important opportunity for Algerian steel manufacturers, particularly given their established industrial sectors and demand for steel products.

A strategic boost for non-hydrocarbon exports

The shipment comes as Algeria continues to pursue a national strategy aimed at diversifying its economy and increasing exports beyond oil and natural gas.

For decades, hydrocarbons have dominated the country’s export earnings. However, expanding sectors such as steel manufacturing, fertilizers, cement, agricultural products and other industrial goods is central to efforts to establish a more diversified economic model.

Tosyali Algeria’s latest shipments illustrate how industrial production can contribute to that transition by generating export opportunities and strengthening commercial links with international partners.

The export of 40,000 tonnes of steel products to Poland and Italy also demonstrates the potential of Algeria’s manufacturing sector to participate more actively in European supply chains.

Nevertheless, maintaining competitiveness in these markets will require sustained attention to production efficiency, logistics, product quality and evolving European environmental requirements.

Algeria expands its footprint in global steel markets

Beyond the immediate commercial significance of the shipments, the operation reflects Algeria’s ambition to establish itself as a competitive industrial exporter in the Mediterranean region and beyond.

Its geographic proximity to Europe, access to Mediterranean shipping routes and expanding industrial infrastructure provide potential advantages for companies seeking to develop international markets.

By combining industrial investment with export-oriented production, Algeria aims to transform its manufacturing sector into a stronger contributor to national economic growth.

Tosyali Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting non-hydrocarbon exports, positioning the steel industry as an important component of the country’s wider economic diversification strategy.

The latest shipments to Poland and Italy represent another concrete example of Algerian industrial products reaching European markets, reinforcing the country’s efforts to build a more diversified and internationally connected economy.

Algeria and Niger deepen strategic ties

Algeria and Niger deepen strategic ties

Algeria Gate: Algeria is seeking to expand cooperation with Niger through major energy and transport projects, stronger security coordination and training programmes, Algerian Ambassador Saadi Ahmed said during a speech in Niamey.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of Algeria’s liberation revolution, the ambassador outlined progress in bilateral relations, highlighting the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline, cross-border fibre-optic connections and oil exploration.

Energy and infrastructure drive cooperation

According to the ambassador, work on the Algerian section of the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline began on 4 June in Adrar, while construction on the Nigerien section is expected to start soon. The project forms part of a broader effort to strengthen energy cooperation and regional connectivity.

Saadi Ahmed also highlighted the Trans-Saharan Highway and prospects for railway connections, alongside the inauguration of a fibre-optic link between Algeria and Niger on 6 October.

He said access to Algerian ports could create new opportunities for Nigerien exports, while preparations to open an Algerian bank branch in Niamey would support commercial exchanges.

In the oil sector, the ambassador reported that drilling on an exploration well began on 13 August, adding another dimension to the countries’ energy partnership.

Training and trade opportunities

The ambassador linked the expansion of cooperation to Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani’s visit to Algeria in February 2026 and the subsequent meeting of the bilateral High Joint Commission in Niamey in March.

According to his account, that meeting resulted in 20 agreements, memoranda of understanding and cooperation programmes covering several sectors.

Vocational training is another priority. Saadi Ahmed said Algeria had welcomed 500 young Nigeriens since 30 September for training in various trades. Upon completing their programmes, participants are expected to receive equipment to help them establish professional activities and launch businesses after returning home.

The initiative places practical skills and employment opportunities alongside the larger infrastructure projects shaping the partnership.

Security and regional stability

On security, the ambassador reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to closer coordination against terrorism, cross-border crime and other threats across the Sahel and Sahara. He cited a military cooperation agreement signed in Algeria on 21 October.

He also recalled President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s statement that the two countries stand “in the same trench”, underscoring Algeria’s view that Niger’s security is closely connected to its own.

Reflecting on the historical foundations of bilateral relations, Saadi Ahmed stressed respect for national sovereignty, non-interference and peoples’ right to self-determination.

He concluded by reaffirming Algeria’s intention to broaden its partnership with Niger in support of development, stability and regional integration.
