Algeria Gate: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued a new warning about the risks linked to the rapid development of artificial intelligence, estimating that this technology is now powerful enough to enable disasters of considerable magnitude.
In an interview given to NBC News / Meet the Press, Gates stated that AI was powerful enough to contribute to events that could result in “a billion deaths.” He mainly stresses, however, the danger posed by malicious people using highly advanced AI tools, rather than the idea that AI would automatically cause such a catastrophe.
Among the risks mentioned are cyberattacks, fraud, disinformation, and especially the possibility that AI could facilitate the design or use of biological threats. In a text published in August, Gates already explained that these technologies could significantly reduce the skills and resources needed by malicious actors to carry out large-scale attacks.
Gates calls for public authorities to intervene
Faced with these risks, the American billionaire believes that self-regulation by technology companies is not enough. He calls on authorities and political leaders to take a direct part in defining mandatory rules, surveillance mechanisms, and security measures governing artificial intelligence systems.
Bill Gates nevertheless continues to defend the positive potential of AI, particularly in health, education, and agriculture. His warning therefore focuses mainly on the need to regulate a technology that he considers both extremely promising and capable of greatly amplifying the capabilities of dangerous actors.
