Algeria Gate: In a prominent international milestone that reaffirms Algeria’s leading role in safeguarding human memory, Algerian cultural heritage captured attention at the 12th edition of the International Forum of United Cultures held in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

In this distinguished global setting, archaeologist and Director of the Office for the Protection and Promotion of the M’zab Valley, Kamal Ramadan, delivered a high-quality presentation titled “The Pioneering Journey of the Ministry of Culture and Arts’ Efforts in Preserving Living Heritage.” He shed light on Algeria’s unique and comprehensive experience in protecting, preserving, and valorizing both tangible and intangible heritage.
The presentation carefully reviewed the organizational and legislative mechanisms adopted by Algeria, alongside conservation and restoration projects and the sustained efforts to transmit living heritage to future generations. It also highlighted the pivotal role played by the Office for the Protection and Promotion of the M’zab Valley since its establishment in 1970 in safeguarding the architectural and civilizational heritage.

The Algerian experience presented was not limited to classical methods. It also revealed the qualitative leap achieved by the Ministry of Culture and Arts in the digitization and cataloguing of heritage and manuscripts, as well as the latest digital projects, notably the geographic portal based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies for organizing and documenting cultural heritage.

This fruitful diplomatic and cultural participation culminated in the crowning of joint cooperation efforts through the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding between the Office for the Protection and Promotion of the M’zab Valley and the Rescue Archaeology Center of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This opens a promising horizon for the exchange of scientific and technical expertise and consolidates Algeria’s presence as an international reference in the protection and preservation of heritage.
