In this context, the two sides discussed “the capabilities available to Algeria and Uganda to give a strong boost to economic partnership and trade exchange through the export and import of agricultural products of both animal and plant origin, such as coffee, cocoa, milk powder, dates, vegetables, and fruits, as well as fresh and processed goods that could improve the bilateral trade balance,” the source added.

Russia expands footprint in Mali amid ongoing security challenges

Russia expands footprint in Mali amid ongoing security challenges

Russia says its presence in Mali is based on a formal request from the country’s authorities, framing its role as support in the fight against armed groups. Officials point to operations carried out by the so called “Africa Corps” including security missions and reported hostage rescues, as evidence of growing involvement on the ground

The deployment reflects a broader shift in the Sahel, where Russian support has increasingly filled the gap left by withdrawing Western forces, particularly France Beyond military cooperation, Moscow has also signaled interest in expanding ties with Mali in sectors such as energy and infrastructure

However the security situation remains volatile. Recent coordinated attacks by armed groups highlight persistent instability raising questions about the overall impact of foreign military support

While Russia presents its role as stabilizing, analysts say the situation on the ground suggests a more complex reality with limited signs of lasting security improvements so far

The collapse of the peace agreement in Mali… a turning point that has brought the crisis back to square one!

The collapse of the peace agreement in Mali… a turning point that has brought the crisis back to square one!

The reconciliation agreement brokered by Algeria and rejected by coup leader Goïta
Algeria News Portal:

Amid rapid developments on the ground in Mali, discussion has intensified regarding the peace and reconciliation agreement signed in Algeria in 2015 following marathon negotiations among all Malian factions and political entities, which was set to lead Mali toward a new era free from any external interference. However, the coup leader Assimi Goïta’s rise to power has thrown everything into disarray and brought the Malian crisis back to square one. What is the peace agreement brokered by Algeria and violated by Mali?

The Peace and Reconciliation Agreement resulting from the Algiers process between the Malian government and all Malian political and military factions and entities—which was mediated and overseen by the Algerian government following lengthy negotiations and signed in Algiers on March 1, 2015— It achieved security, stability, and consensus on many contentious issues in Mali, to which all conflicting parties had committed, but which the Malian coup authorities violated.

The agreement, whose signing ceremony was attended by representatives of the United States and France, included several provisions through which Algeria sought to ensure respect for national unity, the cessation of violence, and respect for human rights. It also provided for the strengthening of the rule of law, representation of all segments of the Malian people in institutions, the reorganization of the armed and security forces, and a commitment by the parties to combat terrorism and facilitate the return and reintegration of refugees.

Algeria, through its Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, has repeatedly affirmed that the crisis in Mali can only be resolved through peaceful and inclusive political means, via responsible dialogue and comprehensive reconciliation among all Malians, without any discrimination or division, and free from any foreign interference, whether political or military.

For those who do not understand the roots of Mali’s crisis…here is the full story

Algeria Gate – The current crisis in Mali is rooted in a long trajectory of transformations that affected Reconciliation Agreement signed in 2015 in Algeria, which for years represented a fundamental basis for halting tensions and launching a political settlement process between various actors. However, this path took a decisive turn with the decision of the transitional authority in Bamako to terminate the Algiers Agreement in 2024, leading to a reshuffling of cards on both the security and political levels.

With escalating field developments and increasing indicators of instability, observers believe that the roots of the current situation are directly linked to the disintegration of the previous consensual framework and the transitional toward military approaches that contributed to complicating the scene rather than containing it, leaving Mali today facing an open, multi-dimensional crisis.

In this context, political analyst Ismail Khalafallah stated in a declaration to Algeria Gate that what is happening in Mali today is a natural inevitable result of the coup authority’s decision in January 2024 to terminate the reconciliation agreement known as the Algiers Agreement.

Khalafallah indicated that this coup and the reversal of the peace and reconciliation agreement led, according to him, to the current situation, emphasizing that the agreement had established a framework for stability before it was reneged upon.

He added that what Mali is experiencing today embodies, in his estimation, the outcome of a security situation that was “already unstable,” exacerbated by those decisions. He noted that Algeria had previously warned that the decision to terminate the agreement carries “grave risks” for Mali and regional stability, pointing out that the military option adopted by the transitional authorities in Bamako has historically proven to feed the seeds of civil war rather than opening the way for reconciliation, as he put it.

In the same context, he stressed that this path cannot achieve security and stability; rather, it leads to the persistence of tension factors, considering that Algeria remains a “party committed to the peace process” in Mali.

The speaker also pointed to attempts, as he described them, by certain parties—which he linked to the “Makhzen regime”—to direct accusations toward Algeria. He considered these accusations baseless, noting that the Algiers Agreement had contributed to stopping a civil war that lasted about seven and a half years.

Regarding the field situation, Khalafallah said that it is not possible to rely fully on what the coup authorities in Bamako announce, considering that there is a discrepancy between official statements and the reality on the ground.

He noted the recording of a “series of coordinated attacks” targeting several sites, including the vicinity of the capital Bamako, and the cities of Kidal, Gao, and others. He added that some regions, according to what he reported, are witnessing movements by the Azawad Liberation Front and groups linked to Al-Qaeda, indicating that this reflects a loss of control in some northern regions. He also spoke of the targeting of sensitive sites, including Bamako Airport and the Kati region, which he described as a primary military base.

Khalafallah concluded by saying that field data “clearly differs from what the Bamako authorities announce,” considering that the Malian army in the north is “exhausted and unable to impose full control,” according to his assessment, reflecting the continued state of instability in the country.
