Algeria Gate: Algeria’s Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Sadaoui, has announced a significant shift in the country’s primary-school language policy. Starting with the next academic year, only English will be taught in the third year of primary education. French instruction will now begin one year later, in the fourth year.
The minister confirmed that the education sector intends to strengthen and better structure the teaching of foreign languages across all levels, with particular emphasis on middle school. Special attention will be given to boosting English in language and technical streams, in an effort to align Algeria’s approach with international practices.
The decision marks a clear prioritization of English as the first foreign language introduced to young pupils, while French remains part of the curriculum but is deferred by one year. Authorities present the change as part of a broader effort to modernize and better organize foreign-language education throughout the school system.
