Algeria Gate: Algeria’s national airline, Air Algérie, has resumed direct flights between Algiers and Tripoli, Libya, on Wednesday, October 28, ending a decade-long suspension caused by security instability in the neighbouring country.
The restoration of the route marks an important step in rebuilding air connections between Algeria and Libya, while supporting the airline’s broader strategy to expand its international network, particularly across Africa.
Air Algérie announced that the service will operate twice a week, with flights scheduled every Wednesday and Friday to Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli.
According to the airline’s announced fares, one-way tickets start at 28,383 Algerian dinars, while round-trip tickets are available from 53,527 dinars.
A long-awaited return to the Libyan capital
Air connections between Algeria and Libya were disrupted following the deterioration of security conditions in Libya in 2011.
Although Air Algérie subsequently attempted to restore its operations, flights to Tripoli were suspended again in January 2016 amid continuing instability.
The resumption of services in October 2026 therefore represents the airline’s return to a destination that had remained outside its regular network for approximately ten years.
The renewed connection is expected to facilitate travel for Algerian and Libyan citizens, including businesspeople, families and other passengers seeking direct transportation between the two capitals.
It could also contribute to strengthening commercial exchanges and economic cooperation between the neighbouring countries.
Air Algérie strengthens its African expansion strategy
The reopening of the Algiers–Tripoli route forms part of Air Algérie’s wider international development strategy, which aims to strengthen Algeria’s position as a regional aviation hub.
The national carrier has been working to expand its connections across Africa while improving links with European, Asian and Middle Eastern destinations.
Among the international routes included in its expansion efforts are Doha, Berlin, Luanda and Guangzhou.
These developments reflect the airline’s ambition to make Algiers a more competitive transit point connecting Africa with Europe and Asia.
By strengthening its African network, Air Algérie also seeks to provide passengers with additional travel options and improve connectivity between major regional markets.
Fleet modernization supports international ambitions
Alongside the expansion of its destination network, Air Algérie is pursuing a fleet modernization programme involving new Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
The investment is intended to improve operational capacity, passenger comfort and the airline’s ability to serve international routes.
Modern aircraft could also help the carrier increase efficiency and strengthen its competitiveness in an increasingly demanding aviation market.
The expansion of the route network and modernization of the fleet are central elements of the airline’s long-term development plans.
A new chapter in Algeria–Libya connectivity
The return of direct flights between Algiers and Tripoli carries significance beyond the aviation sector.
Algeria and Libya share extensive historical, economic and social ties, and improved air connectivity can facilitate cross-border cooperation and exchanges.
For businesses, the restored route offers an additional transport connection between the two markets. For travellers, it provides a direct alternative to journeys involving connections through third countries.
The reopening also reflects Air Algérie’s efforts to rebuild its presence in African destinations and strengthen its role in regional air transport.
With two weekly flights now scheduled, the Algiers–Tripoli service marks a new phase in air connectivity between Algeria and Libya after a prolonged interruption.
