MADRID – As part of his working visit to the Kingdom of Spain, the Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, chaired a strategic coordination meeting on May 1st, 2026, at the Algerian Embassy in Madrid. The session brought together heads of Algerian consular mission across Southern Europe.

Modernizing Services: Remote Biometric Passports
A primary focus of the meeting was the continuous modernization of administrative services.
Mr. Chaib reviewed several practical measures aimed at enhancing service quality, most notably the upcoming launch of remote biometric passport renewals. This digital project is designated to bridge the gap between the administration and citizens abroad by providing seamless, efficient services.
The Secretary of State issued strict directives to expedite these projects, emphasizing a result-oriented approach to ensure effective implementation across all consular offices.

Ensuring Readiness for the Upcoming Legislative Elections
With the upcoming legislative elections approaching, the meeting served as a platform to evaluate logistical preparations. Mr. Chaib stressed the importance of achieving “maximum readiness” by mobilizing all human, material, and logistical resources.
The goal is to provide an optimal organizational environment that allows the Algerian diaspora to exercise their right to vote under the best possible conditions. He highlighted the necessity of close coordination with the representatives of the Independent National Authority for Elections (ANIE) abroad.
Summer Season Facilities
In anticipation of the peak summer season—a period characterized by a significant influx of the diaspora returning to the homeland—the Secretary of State called for immediate facilitatory measures. He urged consular heads to ensure smooth travel procedures and to provide high-quality assistance to nationals during their journey home.
