Moroccan Agitators Target Algerian Pavilion at Paris Fair; Clashes Erupt

PARIS – Under direct instructions from the Moroccan Ambassador to France, Samira Sitail, groups of Moroccan agitators attempted to disrupt the Algerian pavilion at the 2026 Paris Fair. Despite these attempts, the Algerian wing captured the spotlight as the most organized and popular attraction, drawing visitors of various nationalities. The pavilion showcased a modern yet authentic image of Algeria, reflecting its rich and diverse tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Algerian participants from across the country displayed a wide array of traditional attire, customs, and traditions. However, as the fashion show for ancient Algerian costumes—such as the Oranian Blouza and the Algerian Caftan—commenced, a group of Moroccans tasked with sabotaging the event appeared.

The Moroccan provocations sparked a wave of anger among the Algerians present, leading to physical altercations as they defended Algerian symbols against the insults.

The agitators were eventually expelled and removed from the vicinity of the Algerian pavilion. Images circulated later showing the group after their “vile plot” was successfully thwarted.

Algeria Boosts Digital Consular Services and Election Readiness for Diaspora in Southern Europe

MADRID – As part of his working visit to the Kingdom of Spain, the Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, chaired a strategic coordination meeting on May 1st, 2026, at the Algerian Embassy in Madrid. The session brought together heads of Algerian consular mission across Southern Europe.

Modernizing Services: Remote Biometric Passports

A primary focus of the meeting was the continuous modernization of administrative services.

Mr. Chaib reviewed several practical measures aimed at enhancing service quality, most notably the upcoming launch of remote biometric passport renewals. This digital project is designated to bridge the gap between the administration and citizens abroad by providing seamless, efficient services.

The Secretary of State issued strict directives to expedite these projects, emphasizing a result-oriented approach to ensure effective implementation across all consular offices.

Ensuring Readiness for the Upcoming Legislative Elections

With the upcoming legislative elections approaching, the meeting served as a platform to evaluate logistical preparations. Mr. Chaib stressed the importance of achieving “maximum readiness” by mobilizing all human, material, and logistical resources.

The goal is to provide an optimal organizational environment that allows the Algerian diaspora to exercise their right to vote under the best possible conditions. He highlighted the necessity of close coordination with the representatives of the Independent National Authority for Elections (ANIE) abroad.

Summer Season Facilities

In anticipation of the peak summer season—a period characterized by a significant influx of the diaspora returning to the homeland—the Secretary of State called for immediate facilitatory measures. Air Algérie officially joins the “Big Four” African carriers at Manchester Airport

Air Algérie officially joins the “Big Four” African carriers at Manchester Airport

The recent expansion of Air Algerie into Machester Airport – becoming the fourth major African carrier to serve the UK’s global gateway in the North – marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s economic diplomacy. This move is far more than routine flight addition, it is a calculated step in Algeria’s broader strategy to position itself as a central bridge between Europe and Africa.

1.Positionung Algiers as a Regional Hub

By connecting Manchester directly to Algiers, the national carrier is not merely targeting point-to – point travel. It is strategically marking Algiers International Airport as a competitive transit hub. This permits travelers from Northern England to reach sub-Saharan Africa via Algiers, directly competing with other major continental hubs and strengthen Algeria’s role in African integration.

2.Boosting Algerian British Economic Ties

Manchester is the heart of the UK’s ” Northern Powerhouse” a region rich in innovation, energy technology, and manufacturing. A direct air link facilitates the movement of investors and business leaders, supporting the Algerian government’s efforts to diversify its economic  partnership beyond traditional markets and attract British expertise into the Algerian market.

3. Strengthening Ties with the Diaspora

This route serves as a vital link for the growing Algerian community in the UK. By providing direct access to the homeland, Air Algérie is fulfilling a key pillar of Algeria’s foreign policy: enhancing the “organic connection” between the diaspora and the national economy, while simplifying travel for thousands of nationals who previously relied on indirect, time-consuming flights.

4. Competitive Prestige on the Continental Stage

Joining the elite club of African airlines operating out of Manchester (alongside Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir, and Royal Air Maroc) signals a “return to form” for Air Algérie. Backed by its recent fleet renewal program, the airline is demonstrating its readiness to compete internationally, showcasing the modernization of Algeria’s civil aviation sector.
