Global Leaders Convene to Advance “Seville Commitment” Amid Rising Economic Challenges for Developing Nations
NEW YORK – Algeria’s Minister of Finance, Abdelkrim Bouzered, began his participation on Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York in the 2026 ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up.
According to a report by the Algeria Press Service (APS), the forum, which runs until April 24, was inaugurated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, alongside the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, and the President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Lok Bahadur Thapa. The leaders emphasized the urgent need to advance the outcomes of the “Seville Commitment,” adopted by heads of state and government last June.
The opening session also featured high-level contributions from international financial institutions. Nigel Clarke, Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, and Paschal Donohoe, Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank Group, outlined their organizations’ efforts in supporting nations through the financing of sustainable development projects.
Furthermore, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Secretary-General’s 2026 report on financing sustainable development. She highlighted the critical need to bolster international efforts, particularly as global economic instability increases the developmental pressure on the world’s poorest nations.
The report noted that rising borrowing costs and shrinking job opportunities, compounded by complex geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, threaten to reverse progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of the general debate, which concludes on Friday, Finance Minister Bouzered is scheduled to deliver an address highlighting Algeria’s national and international efforts in the field of development financing.
