Algeria scored a major diplomatic win as Fathi Boutbieg, member of the Council of the Nation, was elected President of the African Parliament (2026–2029) in South Africa, securing 119 out of 152 votes. His victory followed a strong showing in the North African group’s preliminary elections, underscoring his credibility and parliamentary experience.

In his inaugural speech, Boutbieg hailed the result as a triumph for African unity, pledging to strengthen the Parliament’s role and connect it more closely with citizens. He emphasized North Africa’s strategic importance, highlighting Algeria’s leadership under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in promoting peace, integration, and “African solutions to African problems.”

This marks the first time Algeria chairs the AU’s legislative body, cementing its rising influence in continental diplomacy and reinforcing its commitment to African development, security, and prosperity.

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine Walid, received the Ugandan Deputy Minister of Trade and Cooperatives, Frederick Ngubi Gumi, with whom he discussed opportunities and prospects for cooperation between the two countries, according to a statement from the ministry.

During the meeting, which took place yesterday, Wednesday, at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of the Ugandan ambassador, the two discussed “ways to boost bilateral trade and elevate cooperation to the level of the distinguished relations that bind the two countries.”

In this context, the two sides discussed “the capabilities available to Algeria and Uganda to give a strong boost to economic partnership and trade exchange through the export and import of agricultural products of both animal and plant origin, such as coffee, cocoa, milk powder, dates, vegetables, and fruits, as well as fresh and processed goods that could improve the bilateral trade balance,” the source added.

The two parties also agreed to invite economic operators from both countries to participate in economic and trade events organized in either Algeria or Uganda, as well as to organize a business forum aimed at exploring investment opportunities and establishing mutually beneficial partnerships, the ministry’s statement added.
