In a scene of panic and chaos, gunshots rang out in the middle of the hall where Trump and his deputy, J.D. Vance, were present, before they were quickly evacuated. Secret Service agents ordered attendees to get down on the floor, while police officers rushed into the ballroom and hallways on high alert, amid the screams of attendees and their attempts to take cover under tables.

Trump left under heavy security, while entrances were closed and security forces were deployed around the hotel, turning one of Washington’s most prominent media events into an extraordinary emergency
The incident sparked a wave of criticism regarding the performance of security agencies, particularly as conflicting accounts circulated regarding the source of the gunfire and how the guards handled it. Some observers described what happened as a “serious breach” in security protocols, while others viewed the speed of the president and vice president’s evacuation as evidence of the Secret Service’s readiness despite the initial confusion.

In subsequent remarks, Trump did not hesitate to level direct criticism at the security agencies, noting that “conflicting instructions nearly exacerbated the situation.” He added that such incidents “must not be repeated in the heart of the capital and in front of prominent journalists.”
The incident, despite its failure, reignited the debate over the security of political figures in the United States, particularly amid a climate of intense political polarization. It also cast a shadow over the White House’s relationship with the media, as the dinner—which was supposed to be an occasion to celebrate press freedom—turned into an unprecedented emergency scenario.
