Algeria Gate: Algeria and the World Bank are exploring broader technical and financial cooperation to support strategic projects across energy, manufacturing and seawater desalination.
Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab held talks with World Bank Vice President Ousmane Dione in Algiers on Wednesday, November 4, focusing on opportunities to draw on international expertise and financing mechanisms to advance Algeria’s industrial ambitions.
Discussions covered oil, gas and petrochemicals, alongside prospects for cooperation in green hydrogen and fertilizers. The talks examined opportunities to develop energy and processing industries through partnerships with World Bank Group institutions.
Seawater desalination also featured on the agenda, with attention extending beyond plant development to the manufacture of equipment used in the sector. Cooperation in this area could support Algeria’s efforts to build domestic industrial capacity around its water infrastructure.
The two sides also discussed reducing the environmental footprint of hydrocarbon operations, particularly through measures to curb gas flaring and methane emissions.
The meeting followed Sonatrach’s signing of a memorandum of understanding with two World Bank Group institutions, providing a backdrop for discussions on a wider industrial and financial partnership.
The talks outlined potential areas of cooperation. The information provided did not specify financing commitments, project budgets or implementation schedules.
