Algeria Gate: The armed confrontation that recently took place in the Imzouren area of the occupied Rif has widely opened the door to fundamental questions about the reality of the Moroccan regime’s security and military readiness.
In a scene carrying deep political and security connotations, dozens of security, intelligence, and Royal Gendarmerie elements found themselves in a real predicament and a bloody confrontation against a single person, armed only with a traditional hunting rifle, resulting in a heavy toll that struck at the heart of the narrative promoted by the “Makhzen” about the solidity of its institutions and the strength of its agencies.
In this regard, Youba El Ghadawi, a leader in the National Rif Party, deconstructs the connotations of this incident, raising obvious questions that touch the depth of the crisis. The glaring paradox lies in the scale of the massive security mobilization from various agencies to control just one individual, whom the official narrative describes as a “hard drug trafficker.”
Despite this buildup, the operation ended with heavy losses consisting of the death of a policeman and the critical injury of another, which reflects, according to readings, a blatant organizational and field failure in the ability to manage limited field crises.
Analysis of the course of this event leads to a conclusion imposed by the facts on the ground: the Moroccan security system suffers from structural fragility. The state that has long boasted in its official discourse of a history stretching back “twelve centuries” stood confused and suffered human losses against a hunting weapon.
The Imzouren incident goes beyond being a mere routine security or criminal operation; it has become a clear field indicator of the cracking of the image of the “impregnable security shield.” It also clearly reveals how a simple spark can confuse the calculations of entire agencies, making the question of the extent to which Moroccan security agencies would withstand any potential armed rebellion or real external threat a discussion based on concrete facts that weaken the prestige of the “Makhzen” regime and place it before a real test of its actual strength.
