Algeria News Portal:Reporters covering the Turkish President’s Activities reported that this was an unusual departure from the normal protocol for such an occasion.

According to sources, Erdogan typically waits for guests at his Palace, but this time he went to meet them on the tarmac and offered them the full ceremonial protocol afforded to state leaders when they arrive in Turkey. Under Tebboune, Algeria is no longer merely a country on a map; it now presents itself as a regional counterbalance to European countries like Lebanon and Italy and is treated as an equal by world powers like China, Russia, and the United States when conducting business with them.

On this occasion, Tebboune became the first Algerian president to visit Turkey as a result of an invitation from the Turkish president to conduct business together, marking the beginning of a new era for Algeria under Presidents Bouteflika and Tebboune and offering further hope to countries in the Arab World who long for a more equitable relationship with Turkey.

Economic issues are expected to dominate the talks, as both countries aim to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion. According to the Algerian presidency, the visit, which runs from May 6 to 8, part of efforts to intensify political and economic coordination between the two countries, as the two presidents will chair the first session of the Algerian-Turkish High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, a new institutional mechanism aimed at elevating the bilateral partnership to a more structured and comprehensive framework.

The upcoming meeting in Ankara will be attended by a number of ministers from both sides and will be dedicated to assessing bilateral relations in various fields, including trade, energy, investment, and industry, as well as exploring ways to develop them in the coming period. Discussions between the two sides will also address a range of current regional and international issues, in light of increasing coordination between Algeria and Turkey on matters of mutual interest, particularly in the Sahel region, Libya, and the Middle East.

The visit is expected to culminate in the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding, which will strengthen the legal and contractual framework of bilateral relations and expand areas of economic cooperation, which has seen remarkable growth in recent years, as Turkey is one of Algeria’s leading trading partners outside the European Union.

Algerian-Turkish relations have recently reached a new level of cooperation with two leaders exchanging high ranking delegations regularly to both strengthen Algeria’s performance by expanding its economic relationships and improving its visible presence inside the region and internationally as well as for Turkey working to become stronger throughout Africa.

Additionally, President Tebboune has now visited Turkey three times since becoming president, with his first trip being in May of 2022 and the last trip was completed in July of 2023. Turkish President Erdoğan travelled to Algeria twice to meet with Algeria’s government, one in January of 2020 and once again after he visited Algeria in November of 2023 for a meeting that was held at the Algeria-Turkey Business Forum that showed both government’s are continuing to have large trade flows..

Erdoğan’s latest visit culminated in the signing of 13 cooperation agreements, most notably the extension of the agreement to import Algerian gas to Turkey for an additional three years, through 2027.

In his speech at the forum, the Turkish president emphasized that Turkey is the largest foreign investor in Algeria outside the hydrocarbons sector, with Turkish companies providing some 5,000 jobs for Algerians, and he expressed his hope to increase the volume of Turkish investments to $10 billion.

For his part, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described Algerian-Turkish relations as “strong and promising,” emphasizing the existence of sincere political will on both sides to advance cooperation to higher levels.

President Tebboune also made a second visit to Turkey in July 2023, which focused on deepening economic and trade relations, underscoring the strategic nature of bilateral ties, according to the statements. The areas of economic cooperation between the two countries are diverse; Algeria has come to occupy an important position in ensuring Turkey’s energy security, and Turkish companies are active in various sectors, most notably iron and steel, textiles, and agriculture, in addition to trade and services, with a Turkish bank having recently entered the Algerian market.

Algeria News Portal: As an indication that proves the reliability of Algeria as a strategic partner, recent information from the specialized “Energy” platform showed that the exportations of Algeria’s oil to Europe and the Americas increased considerably during the month of April 2026.

In terms of data provided by the platform, Algeria’s oil exportations to Spain recorded an increase of 106% in April and stood at 116,000 barrels per day compared to 56,000 barrels per day last month.Algerian oil exports to the US also rose by 40.6% from last month to reach 102,000 barrels per day, from 73,000 barrels per day in the previous month.The platform also mentioned that Algeria’s oil exports to Italy witnessed an increase from 7,000 barrels per day in the previous month to reach 55,000 barrels per day in April 2026.

According to the specialized platform, France took first place among the largest importers of Algerian oil in April 2026 despite the fall in Algerian oil exports to France in April 2025.The data from the platform shows that Algeria’s exportations of oil to France amounted to 138,000 barrels per day transported by ships, compared to 43,000 in the previous month.

Since President Abdelmadjid Tebboune took office in late 2019, Algerian-Turkish relations have entered a new era defined by dynamism and increasing convergence. This shift spans both political and economic spheres, set against an increasingly complex regional and international backdrop.

Both nations have sought to solidify a partnership based on regular consultation and mutual support for shared interests. This direction has been highlighted by intensified high-level meetings between President Tebboune and his counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. On numerous occasions, they have emphasized the importance of coordinating on sensitive regional files—most notably the Libyan crisis, where their visions have largely converged, alongside their unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.

Economically, relations have witnessed a qualitative leap, positioning Turkey as one of Algeria’s most prominent economic partners. Turkish investments have surged significantly, particularly in the industry, iron and steel, textiles, and construction sectors, exceeding $7 billion. Furthermore, Turkish companies have established an extensive presence throughout the Algerian market.

Trade exchange between the two countries has seen steady growth• 2023: Approximately $6.3 billion.• 2024: Increased to nearly $6.5 billion.• 2025 (Latest Data): Already exceeding $6 billion, maintaining an upward trajectory.• Future Goal: Both nations aspire to reach $10 billion in the coming years, reflecting a clear desire to cement a long-term strategic economic partnership.

Diplomatic and Human Cooperation:The current phase is characterized by intensified high-level official visits, expanding cooperation into energy, education, and technical collaboration. The partnership also features a strong humanitarian dimension, evidenced by mutual solidarity during crises, which has strengthened the bond between the two nations beyond official frameworks.

Algerian-Turkish relations have evolved into a more mature and pragmatic stage, built on a balance of economic interests and political coordination. Given the current momentum and shifting geopolitical transformations, this partnership is poised for even greater development.
