Algeria Gate: Orange Morocco has yielded to pressure and decided to remove its advertisement on the Spanish AP-7 motorway, on the stretch linking Elche to Valencia, after the ad featured a fictitious map incorporating Western Sahara into Moroccan territory.
The decision followed an official complaint filed by the Polisario Front’s representative in Spain, Abdullah Al-Arabi, objecting to the content of the advertisement that appeared on the highway.
According to available information, the advertising campaign will be removed in the coming days. Sources clarified that the advertisement belongs to Orange Morocco and is not connected to the Spanish company MasOrange.
The incident thus reveals that the colonial map Morocco seeks to market as a fait accompli no longer passes muster; even Europe’s roads no longer tolerate Moroccan propaganda of annexation of Western Sahara. What is rejected politically and legally cannot be turned into reality simply by drawing it on a map.
