Algeria remains the only non-regional permanent observer in the Latin American Energy Organization.
ALGIERS – The Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), Mr. Andrés Rebolledo Smitmans, will begin a two-day official working visit to Algeria tomorrow, Tuesday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons.
The visit, which comes at the invitation of the Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, marks a “new phase in strengthening the partnership between Algeria and OLADE,” the ministry noted. This engagement aims to foster broader cooperation and secure mutual benefits for both parties in the energy sector.
During his stay, Mr. Smitmans is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with several Algerian officials, led by Minister Mohamed Arkab. In addition to diplomatic meetings, the Executive Secretary will visit several key energy facilities to witness Algeria’s operational capabilities and infrastructure firsthand.
A Distinguished Strategic Status The ministry’s statement highlighted the “distinguished” relationship between Algeria and the Latin American and Caribbean organization. Algeria’s journey with OLADE began on July 9, 2001, when it joined as an observer member, before attaining the status of Permanent Observer in 2018.
Notably, Algeria holds a unique position within the organization: it is currently the only country outside the Latin American and Caribbean region to be granted Permanent Observer status, reflecting its significant weight in the global energy market and its role as a bridge between African and Latin American energy dynamics.
