Deterrence Doctrine from the Eastern Depth: A Strategic Reading of General Saïd Chengriha’s Visit to the 5th Military Region

In a regional context marked by accelerating geopolitical shifts and evolving security challenges, the field visit carried out by General Saïd Chengriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, to the 5th Military Region takes on significance that extends beyond a routine military inspection. It reflects a broader framework of operational oversight and continuous evaluation of combat readiness within Algeria’s defense structure.

According to a statement from the Ministry of National Defense, the visit is part of ongoing field inspections aimed at monitoring the implementation of the 2025/2026 combat preparation program across all military regions. The visit began at the headquarters of the 5th Military Region in Constantine, where the Chief of Staff was received by Major General Noureddine Hambli, Commander of the region.

The program of the visit included a moment of tribute and reflection at the Martyr Hero Zighoud Youcef memorial, where General Chengriha laid a wreath and recited Fatiha in remembrance of the nation’s fallen heroes. This act reflects the symbolic continuity between the historical legacy of the Algerian revolution and the current doctrine of national defense.

He subsequently met with regional commanders and personnel, addressing them in a directive speech delivered to all units of the 5th Military Region via videoconference. In his remarks, he reaffirmed the determination of the People’s National Army to continue developing its military capabilities and strengthening its operational readiness, enabling it to fully accomplish its constitutional missions and safeguard national sovereignty and strategic interests.

He further emphasized that this objective depends on the strict and rigorous implementation of combat preparation programs, aimed at building a comprehensive defense system grounded in high-level readiness, operational discipline, and structural resilience.

From this perspective, the visit highlights the central role of field inspections in maintaining the effectiveness of the national defense apparatus. It underscores a doctrine based on sustained preparedness, continuous modernization, and institutional cohesion, ensuring that the armed forces remain capable of addressing evolving security environments.

The deployment of the military leadership to the 5th Military Region illustrates an ongoing process of strategic supervision and readiness enhancement. It reflects a defense posture oriented toward sustained preparedness, institutional discipline, and the consolidation of operational capabilities within a rapidly changing regional context.

Gérald Darmanin calls for a friendship treaty between Algeria and France

Gérald Darmanin calls for a friendship treaty between Algeria and France

Algeria News Portal:The French Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, has expressed the hope that a genuine friendship treaty between Algeria and France will emerge in the future, believing that such an agreement should be based on mutual respect between the two states.

“I hope that one day there will be a friendship treaty between France and Algeria that respects both countries,” said the French Minister of Justice against a backdrop of attempts to revive Franco-Algerian relations following several months of diplomatic tensions. This statement comes the day after his official visit to Algiers, where several sensitive issues were discussed with the Algerian authorities, notably matters relating to judicial cooperation, misappropriated assets transferred abroad, individuals wanted by the Algerian justice system, and mechanisms for combating organised crime.

Enforcing Sovereignty: Algeria Dictated the Rules of Engagement to Paris

Enforcing Sovereignty: Algeria Dictated the Rules of Engagement to Paris

After months of calculated diplomatic silence that left Paris scrambling, the political dialogue between Algeria and France has resumed. However, this return to the negotiating table is unfolding under an entirely new set of rules—crafted and imposed by Algeria with absolute strategic clarity: total sovereignty, uncompromising peer-to-peer reciprocity, and zero concessions.
The gradual revival of diplomatic, security, and judicial channels is no coincidence. Rather, it is the direct result of Algiers’ steadfast position on critical issues, including memory, identity, and migration. By refusing to back down, Algeria has forced France to confront an inescapable geopolitical reality: Algeria is the irreplaceable anchor of regional stability, and bypassing it is a strategic impossibility.

The Return of the French Ambassador: Back on Algiers’ Terms

Nothing illustrates this shift in power dynamics more clearly than the return of the French Ambassador to Algiers. His recall by Paris during the height of the crisis was meant to be a tool of diplomatic pressure; instead, it met a wall of Algerian indifference. The ambassador’s eventual return was not a compromise, but a tactical retreat by Paris, which realized that maintaining an empty embassy only deepened its own isolation. Algeria accepted the return only after ensuring that the rules of engagement had changed: the embassy’s role is no longer to dictate or interfere, but to facilitate dialogue with a sovereign, equal power.

Judicial and Security Cooperation: Paris Seeks Algiers’ Expertise

This new reality of peer-to-peer reciprocity was put into direct action during the recent high-profile visits of the French Minister of Justice to Algiers. Once a file where Paris attempted to impose unilateral demands regarding extradition and immigration, the judicial and security portfolio has been thoroughly re-calibrated.
The French Justice Minister’s visits to Algiers were, in essence, an acknowledgment of Algeria’s robust legal and security infrastructure. Algeria made it clear that any cooperation—whether on judicial assistance, counter-terrorism, or complex cross-border legal frameworks—will strictly be a two-way street, governed by mutual respect and the absolute protection of Algerian national interests.

Paris in Isolation vs. Algeria’s Position of Strength

Recent shifts in the regional balance of power prove that France’s reliance on Algeria is greater than ever. Following the collapse of French influence in the Sahel strip (including Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso), Paris found itself geopolitically isolated. To safeguard what remains of its strategic interests, France had no choice but to turn to the largest, most stable, and heavily armed regional power: Algeria.
Operating from a position of absolute leverage, Algeria has abandoned old diplomatic pleasantries in favor of a fierce, pragmatic doctrine in its economy as well. Algeria is no longer an exclusive or guaranteed market for French corporations. As Algiers aggressively diversifies its global partnerships with major Eastern and Western powers, France must now compete on equal footing under strictly defined Algerian terms.

Enforcing Sovereignty: Algeria Dictated the Rules of Engagement to Paris

The current state of affairs demonstrates that Algeria has successfully shifted the bilateral dynamics away from emotional manipulation and political blackmail toward hard-nosed realism. While the issue of historical memory remains an uncompromisable red line that demands full accountability, Algerian leadership is navigating the present with strategic patience. By freezing out French arrogance, Algeria has forced Paris to respect its current and future interests as the dominant powerhouse of North Africa.
