ANKARA — Capitalizing on President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s state visit to Turkey, Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International, presented lucrative investment opportunities to Turkish stakeholders at the Algerian-Turkish Economic Forum on May 7.

Djellouli highlighted Algeria’s massive energy infrastructure drive and invited Turkish firms to collaborate on three key fronts:

Power Generation: Expanding both renewable and conventional electricity capacities to meet growing economic demands.

Local Manufacturing: Producing equipment and infrastructure for energy facilities within Algeria.

Smart Tech Integration: Deploying modern technologies to upgrade the management of electricity and gas networks.

On a Day of Memory and Pain: French Ambassador’s Return to Algeria Sparks Political Tension

On a Day of Memory and Pain: French Ambassador’s Return to Algeria Sparks Political Tension

Algeria gate – In a move heavy with diplomatic signaling and historical weight, the French Ambassador to Algeria, Stéphane Romatet, officially resumed his post today. Rather than starting with the usual bureaucratic protocols in the capital, Romatet made a strategic and highly symbolic detour to the city of Setif, choosing to mark his return on the 81st anniversary of the May 8, 1945, massacres.
“A Moment of Profound Emotion”

After a year-long hiatus that underscored the cooling of bilateral ties, Romatet’s first public statements were notably personal. “I have returned to Algeria today, and my journey began in Setif,” the Ambassador remarked, describing the moment his aircraft touched down as “deeply moving.”
By expressing his “deep love” for the country and honoring a day of immense grief and national significance for Algerians, Romatet appeared to be attempting a “soft-power” reset—aiming to bridge the psychological gap between the two nations through shared historical acknowledgment.
High-Level Military and Diplomatic Alignment
The Ambassador’s return was further bolstered by the presence of Alice Rufo, Minister Delegate to the French Minister of the Armed Forces. Her participation in the commemorative ceremonies in Setif is being interpreted by regional analysts as a deliberate “de-escalation” tactic from Paris. It signals a shift from rhetorical friction toward a more somber, respectful engagement with Algeria’s “Memory Files” (le dossier de la mémoire).
The Elysée’s Vision: Toward “Foresight and Frankness”
According to an official statement from the Elysée Palace, President Emmanuel Macron views Romatet’s return as the catalyst for a new era of “effective and candid dialogue.” The French Presidency has outlined a three-pronged strategy for this renewed partnership:

Historical Transparency: Confronting the colonial past with a “clear vision” to build a foundation of mutual trus

Pragmatic Future-Building: Pivoting toward economic and strategic cooperation that serves the contemporary interests of both peoples.

Ending Stagnation: Moving past a year of diplomatic paralysis to engage directly on urgent regional security issues and shared Mediterranean challenges.
Analysis: The Stakes of the Return
This diplomatic maneuver comes at a critical juncture. By centering “Memory” at the heart of the Ambassador’s return, France is betting that transparency regarding the past is the only viable key to securing a stable future with Algiers. While the language of “emotion” and “honor” sets a new tone, the true test of this transition will lie in whether this symbolic start can translate into concrete progress on sensitive issues—ranging from the return of colonial archives to shared security interests in the Sahel.

Ankara Holds Fast to Algerian Gas: Negotiations to Increase Supplies and Extend Contracts

Ankara Holds Fast to Algerian Gas: Negotiations to Increase Supplies and Extend Contracts

Algeria Gate: Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, confirmed that his country is engaged in discussions with Algeria to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector. These talks primarily focus on the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trade, alongside oil and gas exploration activities.

In statements to journalists at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, Bayraktar explained that both sides are discussing the renewal of their bilateral LNG agreement this year, noting that the current contract is set to expire in September 2027.

Supply Increases and Extensions: The Turkish Minister stated that the existing agreement provides 4.4 billion cubic meters annually. Negotiations are exploring the possibility of increasing these volumes to between 6 and 6.5 billion cubic meters—matching previous levels—while extending the contract duration for an additional 5 to 10 years.

Exporting to Europe via Turkey: The talks also covered a potential joint project to transport Algerian gas to Southeastern Europe through Turkey. This initiative would involve receiving Algerian LNG, regasifying a portion of it at Turkish facilities, and subsequently exporting it to European markets, specifically via Bulgaria.

Offshore Exploration: Bayraktar indicated that bilateral cooperation extends to discussions between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Algeria’s Sonatrach Group. The focus is on offshore oil and gas exploration projects utilizing Turkish seismic survey and drilling vessels.

The Turkish Minister emphasized that the strategic partnership between Turkey and Algeria is poised for further expansion, underpinned by a shared vision and mutual trust between the two nations.

Algerian Delegation Concludes Strategic Mission in Belgium to Shape National Social Economy Strategy

Algerian Delegation Concludes Strategic Mission in Belgium to Shape National Social Economy Strategy

ALGIERS — In a strategic move to build the future of its Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), an Algerian governmental and academic task force concluded a high-level study mission to Belgium this week. The visit, running from May 3 to 9, 2026, aims to lay the groundwork for Algeria’s upcoming national SSE strategy by drawing inspiration from successful European models.

Organized with the technical support of the Global Forum for Social and Solidarity Economy (GSEF), the delegation explored one of Europe’s most advanced SSE ecosystems in Brussels and Wallonia.

The mission featured significant institutional dialogues, including talks with Ruth Paserman, the European Commission’s Director-General for Employment, Social Affairs, and Inclusion, and Dr. Yves Coppieters, the Walloon Minister of Health, Environment, Solidarities, and Social Economy.

Beyond political meetings, the Algerian representatives engaged in an academic immersion at the University of Liège’s Center for Social Economy. They also met with key Belgian SSE networks, cooperatives, and incubators to identify concrete action plans, inspiring best practices, and structural levers to develop the Algerian sector.

This diplomatic and economic initiative is part of a broader national project titled “The Social and Solidarity Economy for the Sustainable Economic Inclusion of Young Entrepreneurs in Algeria.” The program is spearheaded by the Algerian Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, financially backed by the European Union in Algeria, and implemented by UNDP Algeria. By analyzing these advanced European frameworks, Algiers aims to create a robust and resilient economic environment tailored to support its young entrepreneurs.
