ALGIERS — In a strategic move to build the future of its Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), an Algerian governmental and academic task force concluded a high-level study mission to Belgium this week. The visit, running from May 3 to 9, 2026, aims to lay the groundwork for Algeria’s upcoming national SSE strategy by drawing inspiration from successful European models.

Organized with the technical support of the Global Forum for Social and Solidarity Economy (GSEF), the delegation explored one of Europe’s most advanced SSE ecosystems in Brussels and Wallonia.

The mission featured significant institutional dialogues, including talks with Ruth Paserman, the European Commission’s Director-General for Employment, Social Affairs, and Inclusion, and Dr. Yves Coppieters, the Walloon Minister of Health, Environment, Solidarities, and Social Economy.

Beyond political meetings, the Algerian representatives engaged in an academic immersion at the University of Liège’s Center for Social Economy. They also met with key Belgian SSE networks, cooperatives, and incubators to identify concrete action plans, inspiring best practices, and structural levers to develop the Algerian sector.

This diplomatic and economic initiative is part of a broader national project titled “The Social and Solidarity Economy for the Sustainable Economic Inclusion of Young Entrepreneurs in Algeria.” The program is spearheaded by the Algerian Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, financially backed by the European Union in Algeria, and implemented by UNDP Algeria. By analyzing these advanced European frameworks, Algiers aims to create a robust and resilient economic environment tailored to support its young entrepreneurs.
