Algeria News Portal: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune issued a message on Monday to mark the 70th anniversary of Students’ Day (19 May 1956), in which he emphasised the state’s pride in Algerian youth and students.
President Tebboune’s message read: “” In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and may peace and blessings be upon the noblest of messengers,On the occasion of Students’ Day (19 May), I am delighted to reiterate our pride in the young students in university lecture theatres, institutes and higher education establishments, and in the members of the higher education and scientific research community, including experts, professors and supervisors, who are working to improve the quality of education and training, to advance scientific research, and to link the scientific and intellectual output of the university to economic activity and public life.The Algerian people, who take pride in you, the youth of the nation, and in your loyalty to the sacrifices that history preserves as glories for generations to come, stand at every historical juncture before glimpses of pride and honour, which on this occasion strike us – in the truest sense – at a generation that, on 19 May 1956, drove waves of Algerian students at home and abroad to join the Liberation Army in support bases and on the battlefields.Those students, sons of a struggling Algeria at the time, were – in the context of those historical circumstances – a privileged class; yet, true to their character, they chose freedom and dignity over the temptations of status and privilege, and thus earned glory and immortality.They are immortalised in our ever-renewed memory, and you are their worthy successors as you forge your path to success within the halls of a university that is a partner in transformation and keeps pace with technology and knowledge, for which the state allocates – annually – substantial funding, and whose structures have been strengthened in recent years by numerous achievements: specialised postgraduate schools, integrated university centres, and increasing support for the funding of scientific research, creativity and innovation, affirming its commitment to investing in the sector, ensuring its sustainability and integrating the university into a modern productive economy, by attracting talent and expertise, fostering an encouraging environment for academic elites, and recognising the contribution of knowledge to the empowerment of the modern state. We are fully confident that students and young people appreciate the scale of the reforms witnessed in the higher education and scientific research sectors, as well as the strides their country has made in other sectors, In fulfilment of our pledge to the steadfast Algerian people and to the noble martyrs, whose sacrifices I recall with you on this 70th anniversary of Students’ Day – with reverence and respect – and on this occasion we humbly pray for their pure souls.Long live Algeria Glory and immortality to our noble martyrs Peace be upon you, and may the mercy and blessings of God Almighty be with you.”
