The Aissiou Case: Behind France’s Sudden Concern Lies an Uncomfortable Question

Algeria Gate: The extradition case of Ayoub Aissiou, a former businessman arrested in Barcelona on July 25 on the basis of an international arrest warrant, is stirring surprising mobilization within certain French political and media circles, even though nothing in this purely judicial matter appears to justify such agitation.

Convicted by Algerian courts and wanted for economic and financial offenses, Aissiou is the subject of extradition proceedings to Algiers. Yet several French public figures are now calling on Madrid not to hand him over to Algerian authorities, presenting him as a “political opponent”; a label that raises questions, given that the man has no connection whatsoever to journalism, literature, or the defense of political ideas.

This mobilization strangely echoes the one deployed around Boualem Sansal, who is himself a signatory of the appeal sent to Spanish authorities on Aïssiou’s behalf. While the Sansal case could be dressed up under the pretext of defending a “writer,” backed by the CRIF and France’s literary elite, the same mechanism now appears to be applied to a case of a strictly financial nature, with no apparent justification.

One essential question remains: what does Ayoub Aissiou actually know? A former figure in business circles with ties to networks of power in both France and Morocco, he could hold sensitive information on financial circuits, intermediaries, shell companies, and political protections inherited from the former system. All of this, in the event of thorough questioning by Algerian justice, could shed light on names and influence networks that remain active today.

This case also fits within the broader framework of the proxy war waged by the Makhzen against Algeria, backed by French, Israeli, and Emirati relays. In this context, public figures, media outlets, and business networks based in Europe can become instruments serving interests far larger than the individual case of a businessman prosecuted for financial crimes.

Beyond the opportunistic rhetoric about “human rights,” the real question raised by this case is simple: who has an interest in preventing Ayoub Aïssiou from speaking before Algerian justice? The profile of those rallying to his defense; largely close to the pro-Israel lobby in France, leaves little doubt as to the true nature of what lies behind this agitation.

Mali’s PM Heads to Algeria: A Sahel Pivot Toward Pragmatism, and a Blow to Morocco’s Standing

Mali’s PM Heads to Algeria: A Sahel Pivot Toward Pragmatism, and a Blow to Morocco’s Standing

Algeria Gate: Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga arrives in Algeria tomorrow, invited by his Algerian counterpart, carrying a message from President Assimi Goïta to President Tebboune, marking a thaw after a 14-month diplomatic crisis. He’ll be received by Tebboune, with talks aimed at launching bilateral cooperation.

The visit follows an August 9 phone call between the two PMs, the return of ambassadors, and the reopening of airspace in July; signs of gradual normalization. For Bamako, reconciling with Algiers reflects geographic and strategic reality: Algeria is a direct neighbor and key partner on security and development.

The move also comes as Mali’s earlier bet on Morocco’s Atlantic-access Sahel initiative has yielded little concrete progress, while Morocco faces its own economic and social strains and growing international criticism over using migration as political leverage, notably facilitating roughly 70,000 undocumented Moroccan migrants toward Ceuta.

Algeria, by contrast, points to tangible cooperation: a donated power plant in Niger, military support including helicopters and equipment, and a security approach tying its own stability to that of its neighbors.

Analysts frame Maïga’s visit as more than protocol; a sign Sahel states are prioritizing pragmatic, results-driven partnerships over unfulfilled promises, with Morocco’s regional influence appearing increasingly strained.

Algerian Products Attract European Attention as Algeria Takes Center Stage at Agra-2026

Algeria Gate: Algeria is making a strong impression at the Agra-2026 International Agriculture and Agri-Food Fair in Slovenia, where it is showcasing a wide range of products under the “Made in Algeria” label.

As this year’s guest of honor, Algeria is benefiting from a prominent platform to showcase the diversity and quality of its agricultural and agri-food production to European visitors and industry professionals.

For the second consecutive day, Algerian products have drawn significant interest from visitors and potential business partners, highlighting the growing competitiveness of the country’s agricultural and agri-food sectors and their potential in international markets.

The event is also providing Algerian companies with an opportunity to establish new partnerships, identify potential outlets in European markets, and expand non-hydrocarbon exports.

Algeria’s participation in Agra-2026 reflects the country’s broader efforts to promote its agricultural expertise, expand the international presence of its national products, and accelerate economic diversification.

The growing interest generated at the exhibition could open new opportunities for Algerian producers seeking to strengthen their foothold in European and other international markets.
