Algeria Gate: Riots broke out in several French cities, most notably Paris and Lyon, following the French national team’s defeat against Spain (2-0) in the 2026 World Cup semi-final. The unrest coincided with the celebrations of France’s National Day.
According to French authorities, more than 160 people were arrested after clashes with security forces. The confrontations included fireworks and projectiles being fired at police officers, which led to the deployment of tear gas in some areas. A shooting incident was also recorded in Lyon, injuring one person. Meanwhile, the French Interior Ministry announced the deployment of 70,000 police officers and gendarmes to secure the celebrations and prevent further disturbances.
