Failed attempts end Morocco’s hopes in the African Parliament

Algeria News Portal: Behind the scenes of the African Parliament elections in Midrand, Morocco attempted to sway the vote by courting a number of delegations through the distribution of cash envelopes on the sidelines of the sessions—a move that sparked widespread controversy within the conference halls. However, these attempts failed to alter the outcome, as the elections ended in a resounding failure for Moroccan diplomacy, which failed to secure any position within the continental institution’s structures, while its rivals saw a clear rise in influence.

While Algeria secured victory by having its candidate elected as president of the African Parliament, the Moroccan delegation found itself completely sidelined after suffering a series of consecutive defeats within the North African group, losing every position up for grabs without exception.

The voting results were harsh and embarrassing, as Morocco lost the race for the presidency of the regional bureau, the vice-presidency, and the rapporteurship, as well as the region’s representation on the committee overseeing elections. It also failed to secure the region’s nomination for the presidency of the African Parliament, which went to Algeria—a clear indication of the extent of its isolation within the continent.

As for the remaining positions, they were distributed among the region’s countries, with the presidency of the Bureau going to Tunisia, while Mauritania secured the positions of vice-president and the region’s representative on the Follow-up Committee—a scene reflecting Morocco’s waning influence alongside the emergence of new power dynamics within the African sphere.

Behind the scenes, however, the situation was more revealing than the results, reflecting an unprecedented state of confusion within the Moroccan delegation, which attempted at the last minute to challenge the electoral process and exert pressure to alter its outcome. These efforts, however, were thwarted by the organizing body’s adherence to its rules and procedures.

Morocco also sought to circumvent the rules in force within the African Union by pushing for a surprise nomination during the plenary session for the presidency of the Assembly. However, this proposal was met with outright rejection for failing to meet the requirement of regional endorsement, further intensifying the embarrassment the delegation faced before the other participants.

Between fruitless attempts at influence and a resounding defeat in the voting results, Morocco finds itself facing a new diplomatic reality, the most prominent feature of which is a decline in its ability to persuade within Africa—a continent that now accepts only the logic of clear partnership and competition based on credibility.

The Reign of Mohammed VI: A New Book Reveals the Hidden Struggle for the Moroccan Throne

The Reign of Mohammed VI: A New Book Reveals the Hidden Struggle for the Moroccan Throne

Algeria News Portal: In a sensational book by Moroccan journalist Omar Brouksi titled *The End of Mohammed VI’s Reign*, he reveals a shocking glimpse behind the scenes within the palace corridors amid a wavering reign that fuels conspiracies within the royal palace and foreshadows the end of his rule, as uncertainty grows over his deteriorating health and his notable absence from the public eye in Morocco after he lost his mental and physical capacity, according to the book, which exposes a series of shocking facts and revelations

under the title “Al-Hasan III, the Intelligence Agencies, Macron…” The book—an investigation into the faltering reign of Mohammed VI—was highlighted by the French newspaper “L’Express,” which described the provocative work as portraying Morocco under the rule of the “deep state” or the “Makhzen,” where all decision-making is concentrated within a tight circle of influential advisors and intelligence chiefs—Abdellatif Hammouchi and Yassine Mansouri—and the king’s close friends, while ministers and business leaders have been virtually sidelined.

The book asserts that King Mohammed VI is suffering from a clear decline in health, as he battles Hashimoto’s disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which impedes his breathing and makes any physical exertion difficult for him. For years, the king has spent long periods outside Morocco, leaving a power vacuum that fuels conflicts and conspiracies within the royal court.

Amid a tense atmosphere, where the activities of conspirators are intensifying and personal ambitions are being exposed, the king appears to have lost his authority and faces challenges to his legitimacy due to his illness, despite retaining the final say and his ability to issue orders with the support of an external party, as was the case with Abdellatif Hammouchi, the head of internal intelligence who instigated a media campaign against the Zaghit brothers, German boxers of Moroccan descent who had become the king’s closest friends.

The book also reveals how the pro-regime media was used to send poisonous messages to French President Emmanuel Macron, amid tense relations following the espionage scandal involving the Israeli “Pegasus” program.

The book also mentions three circles of influence fiercely vying for power behind the faltering king, including a circle of close friends, led by the Zaiter brothers, who have come to act as the regime’s spoiled children. It touches on their most prominent scandal related to the “little dog affair” in 2020, when the entire security apparatus was mobilized to search for a dog belonging to one of the brothers—a gift from the King of Morocco—while an unemployed citizen who found it was imprisoned.

The author adds, according to the article, the circle of key advisors: Fouad Ali El-Himma (nicknamed the “King’s Deputy”), private secretary Munir El-Majdi, and head of foreign intelligence Yassin El-Mansouri, who compete and weave conspiracies through the press.

Finally, the royal family, the author adds, is eagerly awaiting the ascension of Crown Prince Hassan, with expectations that his mother, Princess Salma Bennani, will return to the forefront after years of marginalization, amid an atmosphere of sarcasm and satirical mockery within the court.
